#ThrowbackThursday: Dale Earnhardt, window cleaner

Enough about lug nuts. Let’s talk windshield wipers.

The cars that compete in NASCAR might look like the vehicles we own, but the similarities don’t stretch that far.

Yes, Sprint and Xfinity cars look like they have headlights. But those are just cool decals.

And with the exception of races run at road courses in the rain, you won’t find windshield wipers on the cars.

That’s why Dale Earnhardt Sr. had to improvise one time at Richmond International Raceway.

The incident in question occurred at RIR in the late ’80s, when Earnhardt drove the blue and yellow No. 3 car sponsored by Wrangler.

At one point in a race, that beautiful hot rod received a coating of mud on its windshield.

Without a windshield wiper and owner Richard Childress concerned about losing track position, the following bizarre sight unfolded.
